Amarone Classico Bertani 2011 among the "Top 100 Wines of Italy" di James Suckling!
16 Aug 2019 – Density and dryness that really comes together here, after almost 10 years in bottle. It’s very deep and vertical on the palate. Very pure and beautiful crushed cherries, dried flowers, carbon and pumice. Wonderful all around. Drink or hold. Score: 97 Points

Amarone Classico Bertani 2012
James Suckling: "
Wow. Such a complex nose, with a base of dried cherry, spruced up with hints of mild coffee and walnuts. Then there are dried flowers, wild herbs and spices, such as tarragon and cloves. Subtle hints of dried banana and apricot, too. The palate is full, super sleek, intense and well-balanced, with tight, spice-coated tannins that drive everything forward. Long, long finish. Lovely to taste now, but this already almost ten-year-old will sit comfortably in your cellar for a long while yet." 98/100

Winemaking: Traditional natural method. Left to dry on arèle (traditional bamboo cane racks): 120 days. Crushing in the first days of January. Fermentation in concrete vats. Ageing for 6-7 years in 60-hl Slavonian oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: Intense red colour with hints of garnet. On the nose, typical notes of plum, cherry and Morello cherry followed by tea leaves, liquorice and spices. On the palate, notes of red berry fruit sweetened by soft notes of spices, in perfect balance with acidity.

Pairings: It can be paired with red meat, game and mature cheese, but it is also perfect at the end of a meal and as a “conversation” wine.

THE GRAPE

Corvina, Corvinone blend

Corvina is widely grown on the Veneto shore of Lake Garda and the hills of Valpolicella to the north and north-east of Verona. Sometimes known as Corvina Veronese, it is blended with Rondinella and Molinara to produce Valpolicella and Bardolino. It can be a tricky grape to cultivate, as it ripens late and is prone to rot if affected by rains at harvest time. It is a high-yielding grape and quality is very dependent on keeping yields low.

Corvina-based red wines can range in style from a light, cherryish red to the rich, port-like Recioto and Amarone Valpolicella. Most Valpolicella from the plains is pale and insipid, and bears little comparison with Valpolicella Classico from the hills. Some producers such as Allegrini are now producing very high quality 100% Corvina wines.
