jamessuckling.com 94 "This shows focus and balance, compared to some of the other Brunellos here in this year. Full body, creamy and ripe tannins with roundness and beauty Lovely already Drink or hold"
Decanter 92
Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 "Single vineyard. Tasted blind. Lustrous ruby Minerally, dark fruit that is still a little closed. A great definition of sour and dark cherry on the palate. Great balance between concentrated fruit, lively acidity and polished, long tannins. Drink 2022 2032"
About the Grape: Sangiovese Grosso from the “Vigna del Lago”, near the winery, at 270 m above sea level, on the northern slope of Montalcino. The grape selection during the harvest is extremely strict to obtain grapes that have reached full polyphenolic ripening.
Winemaking and Ageing: Fermentation is traditional like it used to be done in Montalcino (with temperatures reaching 30°C for several days, towards the end). Once fermentation has been completed the pomace is left to macerate on the wine for 15-30 days to obtain a natural softening and lightness of the tannins. The wine ages only in 50-hl oval Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. 6 months in concrete tanks and 18 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Light garnet with very bright orange-ruby highlights. It is a Brunello of old. An elegant, subtle, soft wine with great volume but unmistakable lightness. The tannins are velvety. On the nose, notes of fresh cherries, violets and candied fruit are dominant.
VAL DI SUGA
The history of Val di Suga began in 1969 when a company owned by Aldo Moro bought farmland to the north of Montalcino and built a production and sales unit. That land, used for producing fodder at the time, was gradually converted to vineyards and underwent several changes in ownership. In 1982 Val di Suga started to produce wine and created a winemaking cellar. The first vintage to be sold was the “Val di Suga Brunello Riserva 1977”.
