Cab.Sauvignon Blend
VINTAGE
2014
Country: France, Bordeaux, Margaux
Grape Varieties: 55% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
History: The history of this very old vineyard begins in the 13th century. Château la Tour de Mons, formerly Tour de Marsac, took in 1623 the name of its owner Pierre de Mons. Château La Tour de Mons was later sold to the Clauzel Crunchet family and then bought back in 1995 by a group of institutional investors, Crédit Agricole and Caisse des Dépôts and Placements du Québec. Since very important works of renovation and modernization were carried out in order to restore its past.

Terroir & Vinification: The area of the vineyard on this Médoc terroir is 48 hectares and the average age of the vineyard is 30 years. Also, the grape varieties are 55% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The estate has recently invested in a new winery, new cellars for the storage of air-conditioned bottles, and acts in the rational management of pesticides control.

Tasting Note: For the tasting, this first wine offers a surprising aromatic intensity with a true identity worthy of the greatest wines of Margaux.

Cab.Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and Australia.
