Merlot/Cabernet Franc

Grape Varieties: 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc
Chateau Taillefer is the first estate purchased by the Moueix family in 1923. The name "Taillefer" comes from the iron deposits of the terroir which gives Pomerol wines mineral notes characteristics of this appellation. Chateau Taillefer has committed since 2014 to the Environmental Management System Certification (ISO14001)

Tasting Notes:
With a subtle balance of spicy, cocoa and slightly smoky notes, the nose announces a mouth full of delicacy. The ample attack is followed by a mid-palate with a supple tannic structure and aromas of fresh fruit and white flowers. Its finish, with silky tannins, is of a good length.

For a good tasting, we recommend decanting the wine or opening the bottle 4 hours before the meal, and serving it « chambré », i.e. between 18 and 19° C.

Château Taillefer 2013 will go well with white meat or firm-fleshed fish such as monkfish or Saint Pierre. It can also be enjoyed simply as an aperitif with plancha.

THE GRAPE

Merlot/Cabernet Franc

The Merlot-Cabernet Franc duet is an established and important variant on the classic Bordeaux blend, particularly on the Right Bank. It is used in the prestigious and Saint-Émilion and Pomerol appellations and is behind some very high-profile wines.

Merlot is usually used in higher proportions in this blend, thanks to its broad appeal and higher profile than Cabernet Franc. It provides most of the fruit component, offering up flavours of mulberries, plum and dark berries.

Perhaps more fundamentally, Merlot is well suited to the clay of the Right Bank, and a more reliable ripener.

Cabernet Franc adds more perfumed fragrances, usually with a distinctive herbal note. Used in higher proportions, it may also add some tobacco-leaf and green bell pepper characteristics.

The combination has long been an institution on the Right Bank, but the widespread of these two varieties has seen experimentation from several corners of the wine-growing world. In the US, some top wines are made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc (often with the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon) in California, Washington and New York. The blend is also made in Tuscany and Puglia in Italy.

In the southern hemisphere, Merlot - Cabernet Franc blends are popular in regions that have developed reputations for producing quality Bordeaux-style wines. Examples include South Africa`s Stellenbosch region and Hawke`s Bay in New Zealand.
