DOMAINE DE VILLAINE BOURGOGNE CôTE CHALONNAISE LA FORTUNE 2022 BIO
Country: France, Burgundy, Mercurey
Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir
The vineyards for "La Fortune" are located in Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise, with terroir ideal for producing Pinot Noir. The vineyard practices focus on quality yields, ensuring the fruit is expressive and reflects the region`s unique characteristics.

Tasting Notes:  This wine boasts a vibrant nose with pronounced red fruit aromas, particularly ripe and almost crushed strawberries. The palate is fresh, juicy, and approachable, with fine tannins that add structure. It is open and inviting, with a mid-palate closure that transitions into a crunchy and elegant finish.

Food Pairing: Pairs excellently with roasted poultry, charcuterie, light red meat dishes, and soft cheeses. Best enjoyed slightly chilled.

Domaine de Villaine
The winery of the de Villaine family, co-owners of the legendary Domaine de la Rommanée-Conti, is considered the highly regarded jewel of the Cote Chalonnaise. With great devotion, they dedicate themselves in particular to the cultivation of the Aligoté as the unfortunately often misunderstood and sidelined great classic among the grape varieties of Burgundy. De Villaines` decades of work around the Aligoté made a significant contribution to the fact that Bouzeron, the only municipal appellation for this grape variety in Burgundy, was created in 1997. Like the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the Domaine de Villaine, which is run by Aubert de Villaine`s nephew Pierre de Benoist, also uses biodynamic farming.

The Grape
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy`s Côte d`Or.

Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climates of the Côte d`Or.

Because of the thinness of the skins, Pinot Noir wines are lighter in colour, body and tannins. However the best wines have grip, complexity and an intensity of fruit seldom found in wine from other grapes. Young Pinot Noir can smell almost sweet, redolent with freshly crushed raspberries, cherries and redcurrants. When mature, the best wines develop a sensuous, silky mouth feel with the fruit flavours deepening and gamey "sous-bois" nuances emerging.

The best examples are still found in Burgundy, although Pinot Noir`s key role in Champagne should not be forgotten. It is grown throughout the world with notable success in the Carneros and Russian River Valley districts of California, and the Martinborough and Central Otago regions of New Zealand.
