James Suckling: 91 points. "Lots of dark chocolate on the nose with blueberries, ripe blackberries, plums, dried lavender, toast, and mahogany. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Needs time to soften. Try in 2025."

Yves Beck: 91 points. "Les Tours de Laroque is made from the same terroir as Laroque. It consists of young vines and lots that are not destined for the grand vin. Already very inviting from an olfactory point of view, with its chocolate and spicy nuances, the wine is distinguished by its freshness and tension."

Jeb Dunnuck: 90 points. "The second wine of Château Laroque, the 2019 Les Tours De Laroque is certainly worth checking out. It shows the purity and precision of the Grand Vin, only in a more up-front, soft, charming, medium-bodied package. The blend is 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, and it`s balanced, pure, and undeniably delicious. Drink it any time over the coming decade."

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Les Tours de Laroque exhibits a deep garnet hue with violet reflections. The nose reveals aromas of dark chocolate, blueberries, ripe blackberries, plums, dried lavender, toast, and mahogany. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, offering freshness and tension, with supple textures and delicate nuances. The wine`s firm, chewy tannins suggest it will benefit from additional aging, with a recommended drinking window starting in 2025.

Food Pairing: Charcuterie platter, Grilled red meats, Mushroom-based dishes, Roasted poultry, Chocolate desserts

THE GRAPE

Cab.Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and Australia.
