Grape Varieties: Nerello Cappuccio-Nerello Mascalese
WINE AWARDS:
Wine Enthusiast: 91/100
Falstaff: 94/100

Nerello Cappuccio – Nerello Mascalese is a blend of two very Sicilian grape varieties. Together they are the mainstay of quality red wines from Sicily`s east coast and have long been a popular choice for wines made under the Sicilia DOC. The pair are in fact two mutations of a single variety, although the original archetypal Nerello is rarely referred to in ampelographic literature.

Vineyard in Contrada Cavaliere, on the southwestern slope of Mount Etna, within the municipality of Santa Maria di Licodia (CT). This area is known for its high elevation (900 m a.s.l. / 2,950 ft a.s.l.), low rainfall rate, and abundant luminosity.

The vineyard of Nerello Mascalese, the noble red grape variety of Mount Etna, is planted on sandy volcanic soil, with an abundance of skeleton and minerals, with sub-acid reaction. The 50-year-old vines are organized in rows and pruned in Guyot, with a density of 6,500 plants per hectare and a yield of 6,000 kg/ha. The mountainous climate is humid but less rainy than in other areas of Etna in the colder season, with good ventilation and very significant temperature changes between day and night.

Tasting Notes:
The wine has a noble ruby colour. On the nose, aromas of red fruit merge with warming herbs and spices. The palate is dry, medium- to full-bodied, and structured with ripe tannins and a persistent, harmonious finish.
Serving temperature:
18 – 19°C

Food Pairing:  Wine is particularly suitable for red meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Benanti is a wine producer located on the slopes of Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily. It was established in the late 19th century and has been making wine from indigenous grape varieties in the Etnean terroir since. Today, Benanti has expanded to encompass vineyards in Pachino on the southernmost tip of Sicily and in Pantelleria, just off Sicily`s western coastline.
