Nerello Mascalese is a highly regarded, dark-skinned grape variety that grows most commonly on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Its wines, which have had a rapid upsurge in popularity in the last decade, have a tendency to reflect their surroundings, giving taut, fresh red wines with fruity, herbaceous flavors, excellent minerality, and an earthy nuance. Nerello Mascalese wines often have a perfume reminiscent of those of the noble wines of Barolo and Burgundy.

Vineyards in Contrada Monte Serra, on the South-east slope of Mount Etna, within the territory of Viagrande (CT). The elevation is 450 m. a.s.l. / 1,500 ft a.s.l.

Vineyard of Nerello Mascalese with a South-east facing aspect. Vines are planted in sandy, volcanic soil, rich in “ripiddu” (small pumice lava stones) and minerals, with sub-acid reactions. The plants are of mixed ages and include some 100-year-old ones, all trained in alberello, with a planting density of about 9,000 vine stocks per hectare and a yield of approximately 6,500 kg/ha. The climate is hilly, humid, and rainy in the colder season, with good ventilation and significant swings between day and evening temperatures.

Tasting Notes:
The colour is pale ruby with garnet nuances. Lofty aromas of red fruits and spices are complemented by similar characteristics on the palate, which is dry and medium- to full-bodied, with smoother tannins, and a persistent, harmonious finish.

Serving temperature:
18 – 19°C

Food Pairing:  Versatile wine particularly suitable for red meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Benanti is a wine producer located on the slopes of Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily. It was established in the late 19th century and has been making wine from indigenous grape varieties in the Etnean terroir since. Today, Benanti has expanded to encompass vineyards in Pachino on the southernmost tip of Sicily and in Pantelleria, just off Sicily`s western coastline.
