Nerello Mascalese is a highly regarded, dark-skinned grape variety that grows most commonly on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Its wines, which have had a rapid upsurge in popularity in the last decade, tend to reflect their surroundings, giving taut, fresh red wines with fruity, herbaceous flavours, excellent minerality, and an earthy nuance. Nerello Mascalese wines often have a perfume reminiscent of those of the noble wines of Barolo and Burgundy.

Vineyards Contrada Dafara Galluzzo, on the North slope of Mount Etna, within the territory of Rovittello, Castiglione di Sicilia (CT). This contrada is historically extremely suited to grow Nerello Mascalese. Elevation: 750 m a.s.l. / 2,500 ft a.s.l.

The terraced vineyard of Nerello Mascalese with a North-facing aspect. Vines are planted in sandy, volcanic soil, rich in minerals, with sub-acid reactions. The plants are mostly young, all trained in alberello, with a planting density of about 8,000 vine stocks per hectare and a yield of approximately 6,500 kg/ha. The mountain climate is humid, rainy, and at times snowy in the colder season, with good ventilation and very significant swings between day and evening temperatures.

Tasting Notes:
The colour is an inviting ruby. The nose is fine, heady, and spicy, with measures of red fruit. The palate is dry, medium-bodied, structured, persistent, and harmonious.

Serving temperature:
18 – 19°C

Food Pairing:  A versatile wine particularly suitable for red meats, game and aged cheeses.

Benanti is a wine producer located on the slopes of Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily. It was established in the late 19th century and has been making wine from indigenous grape varieties in the Etnean terroir since.
